A much-loved Rochdale venue will reopen next month following a multi-million pound redevelopment, transforming it into a fully accessible cultural and community hub.
Heywood Civic is set to welcome back visitors from February, launching with a diverse season of live events and community activities. The transformation has been supported by Arts Council England, Rochdale Borough Council and Your Trust Rochdale.
The refurbished venue now features a modern bar and kitchen, improved auditorium and backstage facilities, and new accessibility features including lifts, accessible toilets and a Changing Places facility.
The relaunch will begin with a series of events designed to appeal to a broad audience. Early highlights include:
- Meet The Hatter, a playful reimagining of the classic Lewis Carroll character, on 20 and 21 February
- Ed Patrick: Catch Your Breath, a comedy show from the NHS anaesthetist-turned-comedian, on 27 February
- MASSAOKE: 80s v 90s Live, a high-energy live band sing-along, on 28 February
- Family Fun Day, a free community event with activities inspired by Wimbledon, on 1 March
- Bach Reimagined, blending classical music with contemporary dance, on 5 March
- Inspire Young Producers, showcasing local music talent, on 7 March
Additional programming throughout March and April will include puppetry, theatre and Celtic-inspired celebrations.
Heywood Civic will also become the permanent home of arts charity Cartwheel Arts. It is expected to play a key role in developing local artistic talent through producer programmes and support for emerging creatives.
Estelle Rowe, Chief Executive of Your Trust, said the relaunch is about more than just reopening a building. “This is about creating a hub where communities can come together to work, connect and experience creativity in meaningful ways,” she said.
She added that the venue would deliver a broad, inclusive and affordable events programme, featuring both community activities and high-quality touring productions.
A daytime programme of wellbeing and creative sessions for adults and young people is expected to be announced shortly.
