Businesses in Heywood are being invited to sign up to a proposed two way radio network aimed at improving safety and communication across the town.
Rochdale Borough Council is exploring the introduction of a two way radio system linking local businesses with the council’s community safety team and partner organisations.
The scheme is intended to allow real time communication and intelligence sharing between shops and venues, particularly within the retail and night time economy. The council says the approach could help businesses respond more quickly to incidents and improve coordination across the area.
An event is being held for business owners to register their interest and find out more. It will take place between 9am and 1pm at the TOPS Business Centre on Hind Hill Street in Heywood.
Roch Valley Radio first contacted the council about the scheme on 8 April seeking further information after feedback from local businesses. Follow up requests were made, but the council initially said no details could be released and that the community safety team was unable to comment.
The trial is being paid for by funding received from the Heywood Township fund.
A full response was not provided until 17 April, shortly before the planned engagement event with businesses.

A council spokesperson said:
“We continue to develop new initiatives to strengthen our support for local businesses and make our communities safer. A new two way radio scheme will strengthen our commitment to these goals”.
Business owners can contact the council’s community safety team by email to register interest or request further information.
