Four more fined for fly-tipping

Waste dumped at Lever Street, Radcliffe.

Four people have been fined for fly-tipping on the streets of the Bury borough in December.

Fixed penalty notices of £400 were served on each of them for offences committed at Ferngrove, Bury; Grosvenor Street, Radcliffe; Lever Street, Radcliffe; and Richmond Avenue, Prestwich.

More than 200 fines have been issued for littering and fly-tipping across Bury in the last three years, and more than 20 people have been prosecuted in court.

Councillor Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, climate change and operations, said: “Fly-tipping is an environmental crime, and offenders can be prosecuted in the magistrates’ court. Perpetrators know exactly what they are doing when they illegally dump rubbish. That's why we will take action whenever we can against these criminals who choose to blight our borough.

“If anyone witnesses these crimes, please give us all the information you have and we will act.”

Fly-tipping is illegally dumped rubbish on a road, pavement, or open space. It can come from a household or a business, and the amount of dumped rubbish can range from one bag to a large lorry load.

To report fly-tipping and find out more about the Household Duty of Care and how to manage household waste visit www.bury.gov.uk/flytipping

Don’t touch or handle it, as it could contain hazardous material, and you may contaminate any evidence.

In the event of a fly-tipping emergency such as when dumped rubbish includes oil drums, medical waste, an animal carcass or asbestos, phone 0161 253 5353 from 8.45am to 5pm Monday to Friday or 0161 253 6606 outside of these times.
