An inclusive sporting event aimed at raising funds and awareness for the visually impaired community is set to take place in Bury next month.
Hosted by Bury Blind Society, Love at First Serve, A Valentine Showdown Fair will run from 11am to 3pm on Saturday 10 February at the charity's base on Tenterden Street, Bury BL9 0EG.
The free event invites the public to discover Showdown, a fast-paced, accessible sport often described as 'table tennis for the visually impaired'. Played with blindfolds, the game puts sighted and visually impaired players on equal footing.
The day will include live demonstrations, taster sessions, and a friendly social atmosphere with homemade cakes, hot drinks, crafts, and a second-hand book sale. Organisers hope the event will introduce more local people to the sport and the charity’s wider work, while encouraging new friendships across the community.
Speaking to Joanne, she said the event is about "showing how sport can be fully inclusive and genuinely fun for everyone". Weekly Showdown sessions already take place at the centre on Monday and Thursday evenings, with participants ranging from complete beginners to experienced players.
The society has extended an open invitation to residents, families, and local media to attend the event. The team is also hoping for radio support to help spread the word ahead of the big day.
