Andy Burnham was ‘taken aback’ by a decision to clear Rochdale’s iconic ‘Seven Sisters’ tower blocks, forcing hundreds from their homes.
Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH) announced the evacuation yesterday (October 22) after independent surveys identified a variety of safety issues. It means 229 households will move on in the coming months, RBH confirmed.
But the announcement ‘was news to’ Andy Burham, the mayor revealed on Thursday morning (October 23).
“I was a little taken aback by this move. It was news to me late last night,” the mayor told BBC Radio Manchester.
“I am at a loss right now. Of course safety overrides everything. But there has to be a plan for people. You cannot evict people without a plan. Today I will be looking into this.”
Safety and structural surveys on each of the seven blocks, officially called College Bank, found structural and electrical issues, problems with the water pump system, and damage to the roof.
Evacuation is the latest chapter in the nearly-decade;long saga over the future of the towers. In 2017, RBH revealed plans to demolish four towers and refurbish the remaining three.
But years of campaigning saw the housing association take demolition off the table in 2023, before RBH U-turned and said ‘all options [are] back on the table’ a year ago.
Amanda Newton, chief executive of Rochdale Boroughwide Housing, explained why an evacuation has been ordered: “This was a very difficult decision that is wholly focused on ensuring the long-term safety of the customers in College Bank.
“I understand how deeply unsettling this news will be for people living in College Bank, and I am also truly sorry for the uncertainty and delays over a number of years.
“We are committed to supporting our customers throughout, providing them all with the tailored and significant support they need to find a new home suitable for their individual needs.”
“I completely understand that this is a significant decision that will impact upon everyone living in College Bank, and also know that this will be distressing news for many people to receive.
“Our customers’ safety and wellbeing is our absolute priority. Our RBH colleagues, myself included, will be at College Bank speaking to our residents, answering their questions, and ensuring they are aware of all the help and support available to them.
“We will work with our customers to ensure that they have certainty for the future, while providing them with new safe, warm affordable homes.”
