Two men have been jailed after breaking into a Radcliffe home in the early hours of the morning while a woman was inside caring for her young child. The pair stole a BMW from the driveway before being stopped by police minutes later.
22-year-old, Lewis Muir, of Blackley New Road in Manchester, was sentenced to six years in prison at Manchester Crown Court on Friday 13 March.
Fellow 22-year-old, David Boyd, of Lakin Street in Manchester, was sentenced to two years and four months.
Both men had previously pleaded guilty to burglary.
The court heard that at about 2:38am on 11th October 2025, masked men forced entry through the rear door of a property in Radcliffe after snapping the lock. The offenders searched the house while the victim was inside with her young child.
They located the keys to a BMW 330E parked on the driveway and stole the vehicle. A bag containing a diary of baby scan photographs belonging to the victim was also taken.
The victim called 999 and reported that masked men had just broken into her home.
Officers were dispatched immediately and at 2:44am patrol officers spotted the stolen BMW being driven on Middleton Road in Blackley.
A pursuit followed through residential streets and onto a nearby field. Two men wearing balaclavas were seen inside the vehicle.
The car was eventually abandoned after the suspects drove into a dead end. Officers then pursued the men on foot.
Police deployed several officers along with a tactical dog unit and both suspects were detained nearby while attempting to hide. One was found underneath a child’s umbrella in a back garden.
Inside the vehicle officers recovered mole grips still containing the victim’s lock barrel.
At the time of the burglary both men were already on prison licence while serving four and a half year sentences for conspiracy to commit burglary. They were charged with burglary and recalled to prison.
An investigation by the Oldham Neighbourhood Crime Team also linked Muir to a series of further offences across the Oldham area. He was charged with six burglaries, two attempted burglaries and three offences of taking a motor vehicle without consent.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said:
“Both offenders are prolific burglars who have relentlessly targeted high value vehicles across Greater Manchester.
“Their cowardly actions were particularly distressing for the victims.
“Thanks to the swift response of our officers, the suspects were intercepted within minutes of one of the offences and vital evidence was recovered that led to these convictions”.
