A long standing butchery business with roots dating back to 1935 has closed with immediate effect, blaming sustained economic pressure and steep increases in beef prices.
Albert Matthews confirmed on social media that it ceased trading earlier this week, bringing an end to more than 12 years of operating under the Albert Matthews name and nearly a century of family involvement in the trade.
The business, based at Bury Market with an industrial unit at Eton Business Park in Radcliffe, said the current economic climate had proved too difficult to withstand. It pointed to ongoing pressure across the hospitality sector and what it described as unprecedented rises in beef prices as the key factors behind the decision.
In a message to customers issued following the closure, Chris Matthews said the business had been part of the butchery trade for three generations and had proudly supplied customers for more than a decade under the Albert Matthews brand.
The statement said the owners would most miss their staff, describing them as a hardworking and loyal team who cared deeply about quality and service, as well as the customers who supported the business.
They also paid tribute to chefs, restaurants, pubs and hospitality professionals it worked with, alongside online customers who returned regularly. The family said it was proud of what had been built over the years and grateful for every relationship formed along the way.
In an earlier customer message, it was confirmed that all outstanding orders would be cancelled and any payments already taken would be fully refunded. Customers were advised to make contact if refunds did not appear in their accounts within a few days.
