One of Lancashire’s busiest routes has been shut this morning after an articulated lorry overturned and smashed through the central reservation.
The A56 in Rossendale has been closed in both directions between Edenfield and Haslingden after a serious crash involving a lorry, which struck the central barrier and tipped onto its side.
Emergency services, including Lancashire Police and National Highways officers, were called to the scene in the early hours. Pictures show motorists out of their vehicles as traffic was brought to a standstill.
Police have warned the closure is likely to remain in place “for some time” while recovery and safety checks take place. Motorists are being urged to avoid the area and allow extra time for journeys.
A witness at the scene reported a diesel spill across the road, adding to the disruption.
National Highways confirmed:
“The A56 is closed in both directions between the M66 (Edenfield) and the A682 (New Hall Hey) due to a collision where a lorry has struck the central reservation barrier. Emergency services including Lancashire Police are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene assisting with traffic management.”
Diversions are currently in place. Southbound traffic is being redirected via the A681, A680, B6257 and Bury Road before rejoining the M66. Northbound traffic is being diverted from junction 1 of the M66 through Bury Road and the B6257 before rejoining the A56.
Drivers are advised to follow diversion signs and check live traffic updates before travelling.
