Shakers suffer pre season setback against Morecambe

Morecambe ran out 2-0 winners over Bury at Gigg Lane as two early goals proved enough to separate the sides in the Shakers' latest pre-season outing.

The visitors made the worst possible start for Bury, taking the lead inside the opening minute. After just 30 seconds, Teddy Collis capitalised on an early opening to fire Morecambe ahead before the hosts had settled into the contest, he was unmarked in the box with his header looping into the back of the net.

Bury looked to respond immediately and almost found a way back. James Melhado delivered a dangerous cross from the right that looped over the goalkeeper, but Tom Carr was unable to apply the finishing touch at the far post.

The Shakers continued to threaten down the flanks, with Melhado heavily involved in the early attacking play. His inviting delivery on 12 minutes found Anthony Dudley, whose attempt drifted narrowly wide as Bury searched for a quick equaliser.

Morecambe thought they had doubled their advantage three minutes later when Cameron Coxe found the net, but the assistant referee's flag was already raised for offside, offering Bury a brief reprieve.

That respite was short-lived. On 20 minutes, Collis struck again to double the visitors' lead, beating Bailey Sloane before finishing confidently to put Morecambe firmly in control.

Bury continued to create opportunities despite the setback. Connor Pye produced an excellent cross midway through the first half that picked out Melhado, but the forward's header cleared the crossbar.

Anthony Johnson was then forced into an early change on 32 minutes after Aiden Walker was unable to continue, with Oscar Threlkeld introduced in his place.

Bury looked to build momentum after the restart and enjoyed more possession, but clear-cut chances proved difficult to come by against a disciplined Morecambe defence. The visitors remained organised throughout the second period, limiting the Shakers' opportunities while comfortably protecting their lead.

Despite Bury's improved spells of possession and attacking intent after the break, they were unable to find a route back into the contest. Morecambe saw out the closing stages professionally to secure a 2-0 victory, handing the Shakers defeat in their latest pre-season test ahead of the new campaign.

Star rating: 3/5
