Anthony Johnson has been appointed as Bury Football Club’s new First Team Manager with immediate effect, marking what the club has described as a ‘clear statement of intent’ for its future.
Johnson, widely known as “Jonno”, brings a strong record of success in non-league football. His previous roles include guiding Ramsbottom United to promotion from the NPL West, a string of promotions with Salford City up to the National League, and leading Chester FC to third place in the National League North before the pandemic disrupted the 2020–21 season. Most recently, he took Radcliffe up to the National League North.
The appointment comes as Bury push for promotion themselves. The club currently sit second in the Northern Premier League West Division, having enjoyed a nine-game unbeaten run under interim boss Tim Lees.
Lees, who will remain at the club as Assistant Manager, was thanked for his leadership during a vital stretch of the season. His efforts, along with those of Sam Ashton and the wider coaching team, helped steady the squad and maintain momentum.
Bury say Johnson’s arrival aligns with the club’s values of ambition, unity, and energy. Known for building tightly organised, aggressive and spirited teams, Johnson is expected to bring a clear playing identity and strong dressing room culture that fans can rally behind.
In a statement, the club said: “This is a bold step forward for Bury Football Club and a clear signal of our ambition for the future. There is renewed optimism and confidence as we begin this next chapter.”
