Youth centres across Rochdale borough will be improved following more than £100000 in new funding. Work is expected to be completed by May 2026.
Rochdale Borough Council has secured £81070 from the government Better Youth Spaces Fund, alongside £20000 from its own capital budget, to upgrade three youth facilities.
The funding will be used to improve The Yard Youth Club in Darnhill, Milnrow Youth Club and Matthew Moss Youth Centre.
At The Yard, plans include a refurbished kitchen and a new open cafe area designed to create a shared space for young people. Milnrow Youth Club will have its bathroom facilities upgraded, while Matthew Moss Youth Centre will receive new flooring.
The council said the improvements are intended to ensure the centres remain well used and valued by young people in the borough.
Additional funding will also provide a new minibus for Rochdale Youth Service. The vehicle will be used to support trips and activities, including visits to locations in south Wales and Scotland, replacing an existing bus that is due to be retired.
Councillor Rachel Massey said “Our youth centres are incredibly well liked, and they provide a warm, fun and welcoming environment for our young people to use, share and enjoy with their peers.
“The experiences they create here make lasting memories in their childhoods. Whether that be making new friends and being involved in fun weekly activities or learning new skills and participating in wider groups and opportunities that help them to grow as individuals.
“I am absolutely delighted we can expand and improve our existing offer for them as it will help our young people to create even more cherished memories with each other.
“I really look forward to seeing the impact these improvements will have in their future as we continue to give them the best start in life and thank you to our grant providers for helping us to make this happen.”
Rochdale Youth Service supports young people aged 11 to 19 through a range of activities including sports, games, outdoor education and group sessions. Youth workers also provide guidance and support to those attending the centres.
