Elsie Blundell MP has launched a new summer school aimed at giving teenagers from Heywood and Middleton North a glimpse into careers in public service and government
Teenagers from across Heywood and Middleton North are being invited to apply for a brand new summer school hosted by local MP Elsie Blundell.
The initiative, named “Fly High” after Heywood’s town motto Alte Volo, is designed for young people aged 16 to 19 and offers a week of work experience placements and skills-building activities, including a trip to London to visit Parliament.
The scheme was created to support local youth who may not otherwise have access to similar opportunities.
She said: “I want to create opportunities for local young people, including in relation to jobs and education that will give them, and our area, a stronger future.
“The summer school will provide work experience opportunities and a glimpse into the corridors of power to those who might not otherwise be able to access this.”
Work experience placements will include time spent with key local institutions such as Greater Manchester Police, Rochdale Borough Council, Rochdale Boroughwide Housing, and Transport for Greater Manchester.
Blundell added: “I represent everyone, regardless of background, and I want to level the playing field for our young people so they can achieve their own ambitions.”
The programme is in its first year and will initially offer just five places, with plans to expand in future years.
Applications are now open at elsieblundell.org.uk/flyhigh, with additional support available to help applicants who may need assistance completing the form.
“This is about giving people a chance they wouldn’t normally have,” Blundell said. “So if anyone’s unsure how to fill in the form, my office is happy to help. More details are on the website.”
