Work is set to begin shortly on a major expansion of Millwood Primary School, significantly enhancing educational provision for children with special educational needs in Bury.
The £13 million project involves the construction of a new wing and essential repairs to the existing building and roof. This development is a central element of Bury Council's strategy to meet the increasing demand for local special needs provision, allowing more children to have their educational requirements met within the borough.
Millwood Primary School currently supports 176 primary-aged pupils who have a range of additional educational needs and disabilities. Upon completion, the expansion will accommodate an additional 50 pupils.
Councillors approved the expansion plans last night, with construction work due to start on 4 August 2025. The project is expected to be completed by September 2026, in time for the new academic year.
Councillor Lucy Smith, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, emphasised the council's dedication to enhancing special educational provision, stating: "Ensuring access to excellent education for every child in Bury is a priority for us. With the rising number of young people with identified special needs, increasing local capacity with partners like Millwood is a crucial part of our plan."
She added: "This is one of many steps we are taking to ensure that every child in Bury has the opportunity to reach their full potential and lead happy, healthy, and successful lives."
