Several older iPhone models will no longer support WhatsApp from Monday 5 May 2025, leaving users unable to access the popular messaging service unless they upgrade their software or device.
The change affects iPhone users operating on iOS versions below 15.1, following a move by WhatsApp to end support for older systems. According to technology site WABetaInfo, this update is part of the app’s ongoing optimisation to support new features and ensure compatibility with modern security standards.
A statement on the site explained: “One of the main reasons for this change is that newer versions of iOS include updated APIs and improved technologies that WhatsApp relies on to deliver new features. By not supporting older versions, WhatsApp will be able to optimise the app and introduce new features that simply wouldn't be possible with outdated operating systems.”
iPhones running iOS 12, such as the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, will be cut off from the service from Monday, as they cannot upgrade beyond iOS 12.5.7.
The move applies to both the standard and business versions of the app, which means users on unsupported devices will be locked out entirely.
The Meta-owned messaging platform issued notifications to affected users towards the end of 2024, giving them several months’ notice to take action.
WhatsApp regularly updates its support list to maintain user security and app functionality. For those affected, continuing to use the service will now require switching to a device that supports iOS 15.1 or later.
Apple users can check their device software by going to Settings > General > About. Those eligible can update via Settings > General > Software Update.
