The Communards

Never Can Say Goodbye

We will remember them – on Armistice Day and beyond

The Mayor of Bury will be taking part in a civic march on Remembrance Sunday (13 Nov) to pay tribute to the fallen.

Councillor Shaheena Haroon will join representatives of service, ex-service, pre-service and civilian organisations across Bury on this most poignant of days.

A procession will depart from Bury Town Hall at 10.30am and move along Knowsley Street, Haymarket Street and Market Street to the Cenotaph. A two-minute silence will be observed at 11am and a civic service of remembrance held at Bury Parish Church.

Members of the public are invited to join in the singing of hymns during the Wreath Laying Ceremony. The service will then be held in the church followed by a “March Past” of various detachments at approximately 12.30pm, where the mayor will take the salute.

Cllr Haroon said: “Every year we wear our poppies with pride in support of the men and women who fought for our freedom and for those who are continuing to serve and protect our nation. This solemn and moving occasion always brings our communities together to remember their sacrifice in ensuring we enjoy the freedoms we do today.”

The mayor will also attend a civic service in Tottington later on Sunday, laying a wreath at the war memorial to the music of Tottington Public Band.

A number of services and commemorations are taking place across the whole borough of Bury over the weekend.

Councillor Richard Gold, the council’s armed forces lead and cabinet member for finance and communities, said: “We are proud of our armed forces and the immense contribution they have made, and continue to make, to our country, some sadly giving their lives for us. This is why we have signed the Armed Forces Covenant, which restates our commitment to looking after serving and former members of the forces in areas such as housing, employment and skills, health and wellbeing, integration with the local community, and recognition.”
