At Spotland Community Centre, there’s a café doing more than just serving food, it’s aim is to help people feel less alone.
The New Pioneers Community Café runs every Thursday and Friday from 9am to 2.30pm, offering affordable meals, homemade cakes and ethically sourced coffee. But it’s the café’s Pay Forward Scheme that’s really making an impact.
For just £5, customers can buy a VIP card that’s handed over to someone in the community who might be struggling. The card covers a hot meal, drink, and cake, not just for them, but for a friend too. It’s a simple way to help someone who’s feeling isolated to get out of the house and enjoy some company in a warm, friendly space.
So far, more than 100 cards have been bought, meaning 200 people have had the chance to enjoy a free meal and some much-needed social time.
“It’s about more than just food, it’s about giving people a reason to get out, feel valued, and connect with others,” said Daisy Silva, who’s part of the team behind the café.
Each week there's something new on the menu, like freshly made chicken and vegetable curry, served hot and ready to enjoy.

The café is part of the New Pioneers Programme, which supports people who are out of work or facing other barriers in life. It offers one-to-one mentoring, coaching, and practical help to boost wellbeing and build confidence. The programme is a partnership between Rochdale Boroughwide Housing and Rochdale Council, aiming to support people back into education, work, or community life.
This winter, the team hopes to serve 2,000 meals to local people who need a boost, whether they’re feeling the pinch from rising costs, or just need a reason to get out and talk to someone.
“We want this to be a warm, welcoming place,” said Daisy. “A café where people feel looked after, where someone remembers your name.”
