Andrew Nutter says ‘scum’ won’t keep him grounded as community rallies around popular pub after overnight attack
Police are investigating after vandals smashed windows and the front door of a popular gastropub run by award-winning chef Andrew Nutter in the early hours of Monday morning.
The Bird at Birtle, located near Heywood, was targeted just after midnight on Sunday 28 September, shortly after staff had completed a busy weekend service. CCTV footage has been handed over to Greater Manchester Police, who responded swiftly following alerts from local residents.
Chef Nutter, who previously ran the acclaimed Nutters Restaurant in Rochdale, took to social media to condemn the incident, branding those responsible as “scum”.
Speaking about the attack, he said: “The Bird at Birtle’s wings may have been broken last night, but we fly again on Wednesday.” He also thanked passers-by and officers for their prompt action and urged customers to show their support as the pub prepares to reopen midweek.
The damage included a shattered side window and significant destruction to the front door, which has since been boarded up. According to Nutter, no items appear to have been stolen during the incident, though the cost and inconvenience of repairs are considerable.
In an Instagram post, he added: “We will find you. CCTV footage given to police, so await the knock on the door. #scum!”
Despite the challenges, Nutter remained resolute. “Another day, another battle trying to keep yourself focused on running a successful business,” he told local press. “Petty thieves will not succeed.”
Police have not confirmed any arrests as of Tuesday morning but are understood to be reviewing footage and witness reports. A spokesperson said enquiries are ongoing.
