A Year 11 student at Newhouse Academy in Heywood has received a top regional award from the RAF Air Cadets in recognition of her exceptional commitment, leadership, and passion for science and aviation.
Eguono Idiegbe, who also serves as a school prefect, was named ‘Best Cadet under 16 years of age’ by 2301 Heywood Squadron RAF Air Cadets at their recent annual awards evening.
She credits her father for encouraging her to join the organisation, which she says has sparked a lasting interest in aviation, adventure, and leadership.
Eguono attends cadet sessions twice a week and has completed advanced training in first aid, cyber defence, and leadership. She has also gained practical flight experience and praised the cadets for helping her build friendships with like-minded young people who share her passion for STEM.
Her award comes as she prepares for her GCSE exams, with plans to study Chemistry and Physics at a higher level. She also hopes to continue developing within her cadet role.
Miss Hughes, Head of Year 11 at Newhouse Academy, described Eguono as an “outstanding prefect and leader”.
“Eguono truly embodies our academy’s core values of aspiration, integrity, and respect,” she said. “Her success with the RAF Air Cadets is a testament to her hard work and leadership potential.”
