Residents and businesses across Rochdale and Greater Manchester are being urged to protect their water pipes as temperatures are forecast to plunge this weekend, raising the risk of bursts and flooding.
United Utilities has issued practical advice to help prevent damage to plumbing systems during the anticipated cold snap. When water freezes, it expands, putting pressure on pipes and joints. This can cause cracks or splits, leading to leaks once the ice thaws.
The North West water provider is encouraging households and businesses to follow the mantra “prepare, insulate, protect” to minimise the risk:
- Prepare: Know where your stop tap is located and ensure it works. United Utilities suggests keeping a plumber’s contact details to hand and checking if leaks or burst pipes are covered under insurance policies.
- Insulate: Use lagging on pipes in cold areas such as garages, lofts or outdoors. Insulating hot water pipes can also help reduce energy bills.
- Protect: Use insulated covers for outdoor taps and protect any exposed equipment.
Lindsay Page, head of water services for United Utilities in Greater Manchester, said:
“When temperatures drop, pipes that aren’t insulated can freeze and this can cause them to block or even crack, which can cause flooding.
“Customers can take a few simple steps which will go a long way to helping them avoid any nasty burst pipes and all the inconvenience and repair costs that this brings.”
The advice comes just days after Rochdale Council warned of ongoing severe winter weather, with snow and sub-zero temperatures making travel hazardous and affecting services.
As temperatures are expected to fall below freezing again in the coming days, United Utilities has also reminded customers about its Priority Services scheme. The initiative is designed to support residents who may be more vulnerable, including those with medical conditions, disabilities, mental health difficulties or financial challenges.
Customers can register themselves or someone else for Priority Services by visiting www.unitedutilities.com/help-and-support/priority-services or calling the dedicated team on 0345 672 2888.
