Tributes are flooding in following the sudden death of ‘deeply respected and passionate’ community hero Dale Harris. The 31-year-old, well-known in the community for supporting youngsters into football and championing local sports, passed away at Royal Oldham Hospital on Monday, January 12
The young dad-of-three has been described as ‘deeply kind’ and ‘the kind of person who would do anything for anyone’. He worked as the commercial manager for Chadderton FC, and previously held roles at Latics (Oldham Athletic) and as director of sports charity Dream Big Sports.
His partner Georgia Harris shared the sad news online, stating: “As some of you have already heard, my best friend, my love, Dale has passed away.
“We’re incredibly grateful for the kindness and messages we’ve received. We’re just trying to process this quietly as a family right now.”
Since then, hundreds have shared in their sadness, including local football teams, the council, Oldham MP Jim McMahon, and several businesses where Harris has worked. A crowdfunder shared by Chadderton FC has also raised more than £10,000 to support the family.
Statements released by the club read: “Dale was a much loved member of Chadderton FC.
“Dale joined our management team last year and made a huge impact in developing our Club with numerous projects he undertook to take this Club forward to new levels.
“It is a huge loss to our Club and he will be sadly missed by us all.”
The club’s next game against North Shields on Saturday, January 17, will now be held in Harris’ honour. Tributes will be accepted at the Emplas Commercial North Stadium on Andrew Street on the family’s behalf.
Harris’ former employers at Latics also shared in the grief, stating: “Everyone at Oldham Athletic is shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and former colleague, Dale Harris.
“From starting as a matchday volunteer, Dale progressed to become a coach and education officer with Oldham Athletic Community Trust, and most recently the club’s Head of Commercial.
“As a club, we send our heartfelt thoughts and condolences to all of Dale’s family and loved ones following this incredibly sad news.”
Oldham West, Chadderton and Royton MP Jim McMahon also shared ‘heartfelt condolences’ with Harrris’ friends and family, describing him as ‘quite the force in Chadderton and Oldham who did so much food for our community’.
Council leader coun Arooj Shah added she was ‘deeply saddened and shocked’ about the news.
“His energy and vision made a lasting impact on the local football and sports community, he will be greatly missed,” said Shah.
As well as official statements, more than 500 comments have poured in from locals whose lives have been touched by Harris’ work or personality.
