Middleton has long been considered a signal deadspot for mobile phones, now a 30m high telecommunications mast is hoping to solve that problem.
The plan to build the huge mast within a woodland on the grounds of North Manchester Golf Club has now been approved. The applicant, Jet Network Solutions Limited, says this would help improve mobile phone connectivity in the area and boost 4G and 5G networks.
The Heywood and Middleton North MP Elsie Blundell has recently campaigned to help improve phone signal in the town.
The politician says the reason for the recent problems is due to vandalism at a mast on the top of the Warwick Mill in the centre of Middleton.
This latest plan from Jet Network Solutions Limited hopes to solve this issue for residents. It would also align with the government’s digital connectivity strategy to make sure all towns and their businesses are not falling behind in the digital age.
Planning papers read: “The proposal forms part of a targeted network improvement programme aimed at enhancing existing 4G service and introducing 5G capability to meet rising consumer demand and resolve a significant local service deficiency.
“The proposed structure has been specifically designed to support infrastructure sharing, allowing for future accommodation of additional mobile network operators.
“The principal aim of the development is to re-establish and enhance VMO2’s mobile coverage, which has been substantially reduced since 2022.
“Network performance data confirms a marked shortfall in 4G provision across this part of Middleton, with extensive areas currently receiving the lowest levels of service.”
