Thousands take part in Bury BID 10K and junior races as community spirit shines

Bury was alive with energy this morning as thousands of runners, volunteers and supporters gathered for the return of the Bury BID 10K alongside Mini and Junior events.

The races, organised in partnership with Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All, saw participants of all ages running for charity, community and personal achievement.

The 10K route began at The Rock Shopping Centre, leading athletes through the Kirklees Trail nature reserve before looping back to the town centre for the finish.

Among the elite runners, Benjamin Kirkman set a new course record of 32 minutes 5 seconds in the men’s race, followed closely by Luke Edwards at 32 minutes 11 seconds and Callum Gaunt in third with 35 minutes 27 seconds.

Charlotte Gregory topped the women’s leaderboard with an impressive 41:26, with Emma Stansfield (42:25) and Elizabeth Cooke (43:54) completing the podium.

The event was more than a competitive showcase, with thousands of pounds raised for both local and national charities, including Backup North West, the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Jigsaw and Trust House. Runners were also encouraged to support causes close to their own hearts.

Children aged three to 15 later took part in the Mini and Junior runs, an uplifting highlight that underlined the festival’s inclusivity and encouragement of active lifestyles from a young age.

Tristan Batley-Kyle, Operations Director at Run For All, praised the event:

“A huge well done to all participants who joined us for today’s Bury BID 10K and Mini and Junior runs. The enthusiasm and support ensured today was a great success enjoyed by all, and saw participants raise thousands for local charities.”

Councillor Tamoor Tariq, Cabinet Member for Adult Care, Health and Public Service Reform, added:

“This year’s Bury Running Festival was a fantastic showcase of determination, community spirit and local pride. From seasoned athletes to first-time runners, every participant brought energy and enthusiasm that made the day unforgettable.”

The event was supported by Bury BID, Bury Council, Village Hotel Club, The Rock Bury and a range of corporate sponsors.
