A murder investigation has been launched following the fatal stabbing of a 19-year-old in Bury, who has now been formally named as Mohammed Afzal.
Mohammed Afzal, known affectionately by loved ones as Isa, was attacked just before 9pm on Friday 1 August in a car park on Market Street, Bury. He sustained multiple stab wounds and tragically died from his injuries later that evening.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that three male suspects, all aged 19, were arrested over the weekend and remain in custody while enquiries continue. The investigation is being led by GMP’s Major Incident Team.
In a statement, police said Mohammed’s family are receiving support from specialist officers as they come to terms with the devastating loss. The family have requested privacy at this time and have chosen not to issue a tribute, though GMP noted that may change in due course.
Detectives are urging anyone who was in the area at the time of the attack or who has relevant information to come forward. Police are particularly keen to speak with witnesses or those who may have CCTV, dashcam or mobile footage that could assist the investigation.
Information can be passed directly to GMP quoting log number 3354-01/08/25. Alternatively, reports can be made anonymously via Crimestoppers.
This latest incident has added to growing concerns about knife crime in Greater Manchester. Local councillors and youth advocates have repeatedly called for more preventative measures and community intervention to stem rising levels of violence among young people.
Police have not yet released details on the motive for the attack, and formal charges have not been announced.
