A murder investigation is under way after a 19-year-old man was stabbed multiple times in a car park near Bury College, prompting a large police presence and forensic operation.
Police have launched a murder investigation following the fatal stabbing of a teenager in Bury on Friday night.
The 19-year-old victim was attacked shortly before 9pm in the car park of the Powerleague football complex on Market Street, close to Bury College and the town centre. Greater Manchester Police say he suffered multiple stab wounds and later died from his injuries.
Detective Chief Inspector John Charlton, from GMP's Major Incident Team, described the attack as “targeted” and said there was “no wider threat to the public”. He added: “This incident will have shocked the community and distressed anyone who witnessed it. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends at this tragic time.”
The scene remained cordoned off on Saturday, with forensic specialists photographing the area and examining the surroundings. Multiple crime scenes have reportedly been established in the area as part of the investigation.
Witnesses said Powerleague appeared to have been open at the time of the incident. Several cars were seen within the police cordon, and community concerns have been heightened by the visible police presence.
DCI Charlton said that specially trained officers were supporting the victim’s family and appealed to anyone with information to come forward. “There will be officers in the area today and in the coming days as we are determined to bring the family the answers they deserve,” he said.
The investigation is being led by GMP’s Major Incident Team. No arrests had been made at the time of writing.
This is a developing story and will be updated as further information becomes available.
