A 14 year old from Rochdale has made his mark on the international stage after winning gold at a major Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament in Italy.
Andrew, who attends Holy Family Roman Catholic and Church of England College in Heywood, won top honours at the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation, IBJJF, European Kids Championship, held at the PalaPellicone sports complex in the Italian capital.
The event, staged at the PalaPellicone arena in Rome, draws hundreds of young martial artists from across Europe each year. Andrew’s performance stood out, not just for the win, but for the determination behind it.
He trains several times a week, all while balancing schoolwork and the usual pressures of teenage life. His family say the result is the payoff for years of effort, focus, and sheer love for the sport.
Speaking to his parents, they said: “We’re incredibly proud. This has been years in the making, early starts, tough sessions, and the odd setback too. To see him on the podium with a gold medal round his neck... it’s a moment we’ll never forget.”
They also thanked Andrew’s coaches, training partners, sponsors and everyone who’s helped along the way, from family and friends to local supporters.
Photos shared with Roch Valley Radio show Andrew smiling proudly with his medal, proof, if any were needed, that hard work can take you a long way.
