A murder investigation is under way in Middleton after 15-year-old Devon Simmonds was killed in a collision involving an e-bike and a car on Tuesday morning.
Police were called to Rowrah Crescent just before midday on Tuesday 22 July following reports of a crash. Despite the efforts of emergency services, Devon was pronounced dead at the scene.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have confirmed that a 59-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody. A second teenager, also aged 15, was arrested on suspicion of theft as part of the same investigation.
Officers are maintaining a visible presence in the area, with a scene still in place as enquiries continue. GMP has stressed its focus on public safety and community reassurance, working closely with Rochdale Council to minimise disruption and offer support to residents.
Chief Inspector Nicola Hopkinson of Rochdale Police said: “What happened yesterday was a tragic event that saw a young boy lose their life and our thoughts remain with Devon’s family at this time.”
She also warned of antisocial behaviour following the incident, adding: “This will not be tolerated and is completely unacceptable. We understand the emotions of the wider community and their need to grieve, but we will take action against anyone found to be involved in criminality.”
Police have urged anyone with information to come forward, either via the Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP) at https://mipp.police.uk/operation/06GMP25S08-PO1
