Police are appealing for information after a swan was shot dead and several ducks killed at Island Lodge
A swan has been shot dead in a deliberate act of cruelty at Island Lodge in Tottington, leaving behind its mate and four young cygnets.
X-rays confirmed the bird had been hit multiple times with an air rifle. Several dead mallard ducks were also found nearby, believed to have been killed in the same attack.
Wild birds are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and it is a criminal offence to intentionally injure or kill them.
Kirklees Valley Wildlife Rescue, who responded to the incident early on Saturday morning, today, 31 May, said the swan’s death was “needless” and has been reported to Greater Manchester Police.
Local residents are being urged to remain vigilant. Anyone with information, particularly CCTV footage, is asked to contact police on 101, quoting incident number 1413 of 31 May.
