All scheduled heritage journeys to continue with diesel locomotives through Irwell Valley
Steam trains have been suspended on the East Lancashire Railway due to the ongoing dry weather and increased fire risk.
The heritage line, which runs through Bury, Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall, confirmed that all steam-hauled services are on hold until further notice. Services will continue to run using the railway’s heritage diesel locomotives.
In a statement, the ELR said: “While we share your love for steam, safety must come first. These classic diesels still offer a fantastic journey through the Irwell Valley, with all the charm and nostalgia you expect from the ELR.”
The diesel timetable starts this weekend, with Class 47 (47765) and Class 50 (50015) running on Saturday 17 May. On Sunday 18 May, the line will use Class 47 (47765) alongside a Class 105 diesel multiple unit.
Locomotives for the Spring Bank Holiday weekend (24–26 May) and early June are yet to be confirmed. Steam services could return as early as 7–8 June, subject to weather conditions, with Class 31 (31108) also set to feature.
