Rochdale Sixth Form College has once again confirmed its place among the UK’s top sixth form institutions after reporting a 99.2% A Level pass rate and nearly half of university-bound students heading to elite institutions.
Rochdale Sixth Form College is celebrating a remarkable year of academic success, with students achieving a 99.2% A Level pass rate and 58% of grades awarded at A* to B. A further 83% of grades landed between A* and C.
Nearly eight in ten students (78%) secured a place at their first-choice university, with almost half (48%) going on to Sutton 30 institutions, a group of highly selective universities known for academic excellence and rigorous entry criteria.
The college, which has been rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted since opening in 2010, was also named TES Sixth Form College of the Year in 2021. Inspectors praised it for offering a “highly purposeful and productive learning environment” where students can thrive both academically and personally.
Principal Karl Smith paid tribute to both staff and students for another year of stellar results, calling the achievements “life-changing”.
“Today marks a moment of celebration and opportunity. These results reflect the ambition, talent, and determination of our students and the commitment of our staff,” Mr Smith said.
“From Oxbridge offers to competitive apprenticeships and employment, our students are shaping their futures with confidence and drive. We are proud to be transforming lives through education.”
Among the standout performers was James Pitts, a former Newhouse Academy pupil who achieved AAA*A in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. He will now read Engineering at the University of Oxford.
“I’m incredibly proud of where I’ve come from,” James said.
“The college taught me to base my goals on my own expectations – not on what others think I should aim for.”
The college also celebrated student successes beyond traditional university routes. Imogen Holt secured a competitive degree apprenticeship with Greater Manchester Police and the University of Salford, combining professional police training with academic study.
“I couldn’t be more grateful for the support I’ve received. I’ve enjoyed my time here and I’m excited for what’s next,” she said.
Students from this year’s cohort have accepted places on degree courses, apprenticeships and employment opportunities across a range of sectors including engineering, public services, finance, law and construction.
The college plans to welcome returning alumni in the future to share their stories with current students and inspire the next generation.
