Eleven young people from across Rochdale have been selected to represent the borough, and the UK, at the World Scout Jamboree 2027 in Gdańsk, Poland.
The group of Scouts and Explorers, aged between 13 and 17, will join more than 40,000 participants from over 150 countries for one of the largest youth events in the world. The global gathering celebrates international friendship, leadership and outdoor adventure.
The group recently marked the start of their journey with a photo at Rochdale Town Hall’s historic council chamber. Now, their focus turns to a major fundraising challenge to get them there.
Each Scout must raise £3,500 to attend the Jamboree, with an additional £3,500 required to support their accompanying adult leader. The combined target stands at £45,500.
Fourteen-year-old Orla Turner Holmes is one of the young people selected. She said:
I’m really excited to be picked to go to the World Scout Jamboree in 2027. It’s a massive honour to represent my country’s Scouts. I know it will be a huge task to raise the money we need for it, but hopefully we will do it.
The group, made up of seven boys and four girls from units across the borough, has already begun hosting community events and taking part in challenges to raise funds. They are now appealing to local businesses, individuals and sponsors to help them reach their goal.
Supporters are invited to donate raffle prizes, sponsor equipment like backpacks and boots, or offer general financial support. In return, sponsors can have their branding displayed during the Scouts’ Jamboree journey, including on social media and team clothing.
The Jamboree is more than just a trip abroad. It offers young people the chance to build resilience, develop leadership and teamworking skills, and foster a deeper understanding of different cultures. They will return with new friendships, wider worldviews, and a strong sense of independence and purpose.
Councillor Rachel Massey, portfolio holder for children's services and education, and President of the Pennine Scouts Association, said:
We are incredibly proud of these young people and what they have already achieved. The World Scout Jamboree will give them experiences, skills and confidence that will stay with them for life.
I would encourage businesses and sponsors alike to get on board and help change these young people’s lives. By investing in our young people, you are investing in the future of our borough.
Donations and sponsorships are being coordinated through the Pennine Scout District and managed by registered Scout charities.
