Families and shoppers took part in sustainability themed activities at Rochdale Riverside to mark Earth Day, with a focus on reducing single use plastics.
Visitors of all ages joined interactive sessions throughout the day, including a bottle exchange where plastic water bottles could be swapped for free reusable alternatives provided by the shopping centre.
A large fish shaped installation made from recycled metal drew attention from shoppers. The structure was filled with plastic bottles and created by local college students to highlight the impact of waste on marine life.
Members of Rochdale Borough Council’s environmental management team were present to support the event. Nigel Goulding hosted an information stand where visitors learned about reducing plastic waste and took part in recycling themed activities.
Retailers within the centre also supported the initiative. Coffee House offered discounted drinks to customers who brought reusable cups, encouraging more sustainable habits.
Nigel Goulding, environment education officer at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “Celebrating Earth Day gives us the perfect opportunity to highlight how each of us can contribute to protecting our planet, and there are countless actions we can take within our own communities to encourage positive environmental change, such as reducing waste and recycling properly which all helps drive a positive change.”
Rachel Byrne, centre manager at Rochdale Riverside, said: “Earth Day was a fantastic opportunity to connect with the community and highlight how small changes can make a big difference. It was great to see such enthusiasm for the cause from shoppers, students and our retailers.”
