A 21 year old man from Rochdale has been jailed for three years and six months after assaulting two Greater Manchester Police officers at Manchester Airport in July 2024.
The sentence was handed down at Liverpool Crown Court on Friday 26 June following his conviction for offences arising from the incident.
Mohammed Fahir Amaaz, 21, from Rochdale, assaulted PCs Lydia Ward and Ellie Cook after officers responded to reports that a man had been headbutted inside Terminal 2 at Manchester Airport on the evening of 23 July 2024.
Greater Manchester Police said the officers attempted to arrest Amaaz before he resisted and assaulted them.
PC Ward, an unarmed officer, suffered a broken nose and later required surgery. PC Cook, a firearms officer, suffered an injured jaw.
The incident received widespread attention after footage recorded by a member of the public was shared on social media.
In a victim impact statement read to the court, PC Ward said she had been left with lasting physical and psychological effects.
She said. "I had to have an operation to my nose, and I am left with a small scar. Every time I look in the mirror, I am forever reminded of what you did to me. This will be a trigger for the rest of my life."
PC Cook told the court the attack had changed the course of her policing career.
She said. "It pains me to say this, but because of what you have done to me I have decided to give up being a firearms officer. I just can't face it at the minute. You have ripped that from me."
Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson said officers had responded to a report of violence involving a member of the public before being assaulted themselves.
He said assaults on police officers could never be justified and noted that the force continued to cooperate with an Independent Office for Police Conduct investigation into the conduct of officers involved in the incident.
