Leader Neil Emmott confirms suspension of James Binks following allegations linked to his previous role at Manchester City Council.
Rochdale Council’s chief executive, James Binks, has been suspended following recent media coverage relating to a past investigation during his time at Manchester City Council.
In an internal email sent to councillors today, Monday 1 December, council leader Councillor Neil Emmott said he had made the decision in order to uphold the council’s reputation and commitment to high standards.
Councillor Emmott said the reports concerned events that occurred before Mr Binks joined Rochdale Council, but an internal investigation had begun at Manchester City Council after his appointment in Rochdale.
He stated: “In light of these reports and the need to ensure that the reputation of the council is upheld, I have taken the decision to suspend James from work.”
Councillor Emmott reiterated that everyone at Rochdale Council is expected to uphold the organisation’s values, including the chief executive. “We expect the highest standards of behaviour from all members of our staff, and the chief executive of any council has a particular responsibility to set an example,” he said.
He added that further updates would be shared when appropriate.
No further details about the investigation or the nature of the allegations have been made public at this stage.
