Radcliffe food hub marks first year supporting local families with affordable groceries

A community food hub in Radcliffe is celebrating its first anniversary after helping local residents access affordable food while reducing waste.

The Bread and Butter Thing's St Johns Radcliffe hub has spent the past year providing weekly food packages to families and individuals across the area.

Since opening in June 2025, the hub has offered members access to three bags of food each week containing fresh fruit and vegetables, chilled products and cupboard essentials.

Membership packages start from £8.50, with Healthy Start cards accepted. Personal hygiene products and other household essentials are also available.

The service aims to make healthy food more affordable while preventing surplus food from going to waste.

One local member said, “The Bread and Butter Thing gives me access to good quality food products and helps me to manage to afford the rest of my groceries.”

Volunteers play a central role in the operation of the hub, helping to organise and distribute food to members each week.

Vic Harper, chief executive of The Bread and Butter Thing, said, “Marking one year in the Bury community is something we’re incredibly proud of. Over that time, we’ve seen how access to affordable, healthy food can bring people together, reduce waste and strengthen neighbourhoods. None of this would be possible without our brilliant volunteers, whose commitment and care sit at the heart of everything we do.”

The organisation says its wider network is having a positive impact on communities across the country. According to The Bread and Butter Thing, 79 per cent of members report eating more fruit and vegetables, 71 per cent are cooking more meals at home and 72 per cent feel more connected to their local community.

Many members also report saving up to £25 a week on food costs, allowing more money to be spent on other household needs.

People interested in joining the St Johns Radcliffe hub can register by texting their name, postcode and chosen hub to 07507 237311. The organisation is also seeking volunteers to support its work.
