Aldi’s playful nod to Oasis and the Mancunian accent could become a lasting local landmark, as a petition gains traction and even a Gallagher gives it a thumbs-up.
What began as a tongue-in-cheek rebrand of Aldi’s Prestwich store in honour of Oasis may end up becoming a permanent fixture, thanks to a petition, a flurry of social media support, and even the approval of at least one Gallagher.
The store, renamed “Aldeh” earlier this month in tribute to the local accent and the band’s Manchester roots, was originally a temporary stunt tied to Oasis’ three sold-out reunion gigs at Heaton Park. But what started as a bit of fun has turned into a serious campaign to keep the signage in place for good.
The change resonated so deeply with locals that Aldi’s social media team weighed in, posting: “Boss said we also need 10,000 likes and a comment from one of the Gallaghers (he didn’t say they had to be in a band 👀).” Among the early supporters was Carmen Gallagher, who commented: “I’m a Gallagher, let’s get it done Aldi UK.”
More than 300 people have already signed the petition, launched by Prestwich resident Ella Curtis. She said the renaming symbolised far more than a marketing stunt. “Oasis gave the world Britpop and helped define a generation,” she wrote. “The Aldeh sign reflects that heritage in a way that feels authentic, local and proud.”
Aldi said the signage went viral because it struck a chord with “pride in where we’re from, and in what this city has given the world.” The supermarket called it Prestwich’s own version of a Blue Plaque.
Ella Curtis hopes the momentum will continue. “In a time when towns often struggle to feel distinctive, this simple change has sparked something genuinely positive. It’s become a local landmark and a celebration of our identity.”
