Police investigate fatal collision at Simister Island after GMP pursuit

A 19-year-old man has died after being hit by a car on the junction between the M60 and M66 following a police pursuit in north Manchester.

Greater Manchester Police have launched an investigation into a fatal collision that occurred on the evening of Saturday 16 November at the Simister Island interchange.

The man was struck by a vehicle travelling southbound on the M66 at approximately 9.40pm. He is believed to have been a pedestrian at the time of the collision.

Officers believe he may have exited a blue BMW X3 that had earlier failed to stop for police on Bury Old Road. The car had been seen speeding and running a red light, prompting officers to begin a pursuit.

The vehicle was later found abandoned at Junction 18 of the M60, having collided with another car. Its occupants had fled the scene on foot.

Police believe the young man was one of those who left the BMW and was struck by a Tesla while attempting to cross or walk along the motorway.

No arrests have been made, and the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as well as GMP’s Professional Standards Directorate, in line with procedure following police contact prior to a death.

Detective Constable Ian Lawton from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Officers initiated a pursuit in accordance with policy after a vehicle failed to stop for police. The subsequent fatality is now part of an independent review.”

“We extend our condolences to the family and are appealing for anyone with information to please come forward.”

Police are particularly interested in any CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage taken in the area around the time of the incident.

Anyone with information is urged to contact GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741 quoting log number 3150 of 16/11/25. Anonymous reports can also be made via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
