A bold new open air exhibition has transformed the entrance to Rochdale town centre, as the borough celebrates its year as Greater Manchester's Town of Culture
Rochdale’s Town of Culture celebrations have taken a colourful turn with the unveiling of a striking outdoor art gallery on Drake Street, transforming construction hoardings around the Station Gardens redevelopment into a vibrant visual showcase.
The Town of Culture Outdoor Gallery features 24 pieces selected through a public open call, alongside two specially commissioned poems and student work from Rochdale Sixth Form College and Hopwood Hall College. The project has been delivered by the Culture Co-op in partnership with Rochdale Development Agency, with support from Arts Council England, the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Rochdale Borough Council.
Cultural Pioneers, local residents representing Rochdale’s creative communities, helped select the final artworks, ensuring the exhibition reflects the diversity and spirit of the borough.
Councillor Sue Smith, cabinet member for communities and co-operation, said: “This gallery is more than just an art installation. It’s a symbol of what’s possible when we put culture and community at the heart of regeneration. By giving local people a voice in the selection process and showcasing home-grown talent, we’re showing how public art can connect, inspire and transform.”
Situated by Rochdale railway station, the open air exhibition has been designed to greet commuters, residents and visitors with bold imagery and storytelling. QR codes displayed beside each piece link to information about the artists and the inspiration behind the works.
The is part of a wider programme of public area improvements during Rochdale’s year as Greater Manchester’s Town of Culture 2025–26. Upcoming events include ‘Common Walls’, an urban arts festival in September, more large murals and pop-up exhibitions in Rochdale Town Hall Square.
