A new school catering to young people with special educational needs has officially launched in Heywood, offering dedicated support for pupils aged 11 to 19 with autism spectrum conditions and communication challenges.
A new specialist secondary school has opened in Heywood, aiming to transform education for children and young people with autism spectrum conditions and related speech, language and communication needs.
Heywood Academy, run by the New Bridge Multi Academy Trust, welcomed its first cohort of 30 pupils this term. Once fully operational, the school will offer 75 placements across all year groups, including a sixth form scheduled to open by 2027.
Designed to meet the needs of students with Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans, the academy offers a tailored curriculum focused on both academic achievement and personal development. Staff will work closely with students to help them thrive socially and emotionally in a high quality, inclusive environment.
Executive headteacher Laura Millard said the school was committed to raising aspirations and ensuring each pupil is equipped for adulthood:
“We are really excited to welcome our students into our classrooms for the very first time and we cannot wait to share an amazing journey of learning and development with each and every one of them.
“We have high expectations for all of our children and young people and we cannot wait to help them all reach their personal goals and aspirations.”
The academy offers a creative approach to the national curriculum, with added support available to promote wellbeing and positive outcomes beyond school. The sixth form will provide a natural progression into further education.
Councillor Rachel Massey, cabinet member for children’s services and education at Rochdale Borough Council, said the opening was a landmark moment for the borough:
“It marks a significant milestone in our commitment to inclusive education and ensuring that every child and young person in Rochdale has access to the tailored support they need to thrive, flourish, and become the amazing adults we know they can be.”
“Thanks to New Bridge Academy Trust and all of the staff at Heywood Academy, this school will be a place where our young people are nurtured, encouraged, and celebrated.”
The school’s long term aim is to help young people develop the confidence and skills needed to become active, valued members of their communities.
