Three new 20mph areas are to be introduced to improve road safety on dangerous roads in Bury. Funding of £543,000 has been provided to Bury Council by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) as part of the Greater Manchester-wide sustainable transport settlement.
The money must be spent on safety schemes which target existing injury collision ‘hotspots’ or which help to reduce speeds and safety close to schools.
Also included are schemes which help vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclist on the highway such as the provision of new or upgraded crossing points.
A lower speed limit of 20mph is to be introduced at three areas. One of those is the Church Street area of Bury where there is a proposed 20mph zone scheme featuring traffic calming.
On Charlton Avenue, Prestwich, a 20mph speed limit school scheme will be set up and similar speed restrictions will be introduced in the Clough Street area of Radcliffe.
Other road safety schemes included within the budget are a new mini-roundabout at the B6196 Bury Old Road and Arthur Lane, Ainsworth
and at Sunnybank Road, Unsworth, near Bloomfield Drive a new zebra crossing will be installed. Coun Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, climate change and operations, said: “The aim is to carry out relatively modest road safety schemes which can provide high value for money, at known hotspots.
“These schemes will improve road safety and reduce the risks of danger for all road users.” The works also need to tie in with TfGM’s ‘vision zero’ policy and ‘road danger reduction’ targets regarding injury collision reduction in Greater Manchester.
Vision Zero’ is a global movement which has been adopted by TfGM and the 10 Greater Manchester local authorities.
