Music and creativity team win national award for bringing joy to supported lives

Two members of staff from a Rochdale-based social care provider have received national recognition for their work enriching the lives of people with learning disabilities and autism.

Kevin Phoenix and Stuart Vallantine, who work for Future Directions CIC, won The Joy Maker award at the Stars of Learning Disabilities and Autism Awards. The ceremony was held at the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel.

Kevin leads on music and creative activities, while Stuart heads up social media and marketing. Since joining the organisation during the early stages of the COVID pandemic, the pair have helped run events such as the Stronger Together Community Choir, Fun Time Friday sessions, themed parties and an inclusive pantomime at the River Beal Café in Milnrow.

The judges praised their ongoing commitment to bringing fun, connection and creativity to people supported by Future Directions.

Future Directions CIC was nominated in nine categories at the awards, including the Awesome Autism Specialist and Lifetime Luminary categories. Autism Lead Jenny Neville and Non-Verbal Communications Lead Paul Lord were both Highly Commended for their work. Kevin Phoenix also received a separate award for Best Dressed guest.

The Joy Maker award was presented by actor Alexander Dragonetti, known for his appearance in BBC reality series The Traitors.

Kevin said,

Some gifts are priceless. For me, the ability to bring joy to others, whether at work or in everyday life, is the one that means the most.

Stuart added,

It means a lot to the people we support at Future Directions to make a positive difference to their lives by bringing joy and happiness.

Reflecting on his commendation, Paul Lord said:

I was delighted to receive the award in recognition for what is almost 50 years of service to learning disabled and autistic people. The award has made me think about the great people who I have met along the way. The achievement has inspired me to continue working hard and keep pushing the boundaries.

Future Directions CIC is a not-for-profit health and social care provider with services across the North West, focused on supporting people with complex needs, learning disabilities and autism.
