Rochdale’s Keira Walsh has been praised in Parliament by local MP Paul Waugh, just days before starring in England’s 7–0 win over Jamaica
Rochdale football star Keira Walsh has received a glowing tribute in the House of Commons as England’s Lionesses head to Switzerland to defend their European Championship title.
MP for Rochdale Paul Waugh commended Walsh as “an inspiring figure for women and girls across the country”, highlighting her local roots and role at the heart of the national team’s midfield.
“I’m delighted Keira will once again be wearing the number four shirt for England,” said Mr Waugh during Commons proceedings. “She is a true role model, and we are incredibly proud of her.”
He also took the opportunity to thank her parents, Tracy and Peter Walsh, for their years of dedication and support, stating: “Her proud mum and dad have done so much in producing such an inspiring figure.”
Leader of the House of Commons, Lucy Powell MP, echoed the praise, recalling England’s landmark victory at the last Euros and joining in the recognition of Walsh’s family. “What joy that brought us all. I absolutely join him in thanking Tracy and Peter for their efforts,” she said.
Their remarks came just ahead of England’s commanding 7–0 win over Jamaica in their final pre-tournament friendly. Walsh played a key role in midfield, helping to drive the team’s performance and sending the Lionesses into the tournament full of confidence.
Walsh, who began her football journey with grassroots clubs in Rochdale, was pivotal in England’s Euro 2022 triumph and is now considered one of the world’s top midfielders. A large mural of her in England colours is displayed at the Inavate Centre in the centre of Rochdale.
Mr Waugh added: “This is a moment of real local pride. Keira isn’t just a world-class footballer, she’s a symbol of aspiration for young people in Rochdale and beyond. We’ll all be cheering on her and the Lionesses this summer.”
