More than 220 young musicians took to the stage at Middleton Arena as part of Rochdale Music Service’s annual Summer Sizzler event.
Children and young people from schools across the borough performed in front of the Mayor of Rochdale, family members and friends during three concerts held throughout the day.
The event brought together musicians aged from seven upwards who have been supported through Rochdale Music Service.
Performers played a wide range of instruments including guitars, violins, flutes, trumpets and trombones, with music ranging from rock pieces to classical performances.
For some participants, the concerts marked their first live performance. Pupils played in small groups and as part of a large orchestra alongside children from different schools across the borough.
All performances followed a summer theme. Special arrangements were created to allow beginners who had only recently started learning an instrument to take part alongside more experienced musicians.
One of the highlights was Rochdale Music Service’s version of The 12 Days of Christmas, renamed The 12 Days of Summer, featuring lyrics counting down summer themed items including inflatable dolphins and rubber rings.
Councillor Rachel Massey, cabinet member for children’s services and education at Rochdale Borough Council, said, “The annual Summer Sizzler event is an amazing opportunity for our children and young people to be a part of as they perform on stage and develop their abilities as talented musicians.
“It brings people of all ages together to show off their fantastic skills, and it is a wonderful acknowledgement of the teaching they receive from the council’s very own Rochdale Music Service.
“Our borough is incredibly gifted and on the music scene, it has been the birthplace to many famous hits including Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark’s (OMD), debut single "Electricity".
“So, if anyone has been inspired to pick up an instrument or hit those high notes with their voice, I encourage you all to get in touch with Rochdale Music Service today.”
Rochdale Music Service offers singing tuition, instrumental lessons, music theory teaching, choirs and ensembles for people of different ages and abilities across the borough.
