The Moorside ward election in Bury has been cancelled after the death of a candidate standing in the poll. A new date will now be arranged within the legal timeframe.
Bury Council confirmed it had received notification that Victor Hagan, a Reform UK candidate in the Moorside ward, has died. The scheduled election for the ward will not take place on Thursday 7 May as planned.
The council is required to rearrange the vote within 35 working days of the original election date. Residents in the Moorside ward will be contacted directly with further details once a new date has been set.
All other wards across the borough remain unaffected and will go ahead with voting on 7 May as scheduled.
Lynne Ridsdale, Returning Officer for Bury, said the authority was shocked and saddened by the news. She said Mr Hagan had served as a foster carer in the borough for many years alongside his wife and extended sympathies to his family and loved ones.
Fresh poll cards will be issued to voters once the revised date is confirmed. These will include information on how to apply for a postal or proxy vote for those unable to attend a polling station.
Candidate nominations will reopen for a set period after the new election date is announced. Existing candidates will remain validly nominated and will appear on the ballot paper.
