A Bury shopping centre has celebrated its most successful year of fundraising to date, raising more than £89,000 for local charities in 2025.
Mill Gate Shopping Centre has confirmed a total of £89,510 was raised across the year, marking a 70% increase on the previous year and reflecting a strong community spirit among shoppers, traders and volunteers.
The total includes a series of creative and physical initiatives, from exhibitions and pop-up units to charity challenges and seasonal appeals. All proceeds supported causes working across the Bury area.
Among the key beneficiaries, Bury Hospice received £2,748 through a mix of community-led events, including a sponsored climb of Ben Nevis and the ongoing Book Nest project – an honesty-based book library inside the centre that encourages donations alongside reading.
Bury Hospice, which provides free specialist palliative care, relies heavily on public donations. The funds raised help the charity continue its work with local families facing life-limiting illnesses.
The Ben Nevis climb saw fundraisers take on the UK’s highest peak, turning personal achievements into meaningful financial support. The Book Nest, meanwhile, offers second-hand books for a voluntary donation and has proved especially popular among families and young readers.
The centre also hosted charity pop-up units, a Veterans in Communities art exhibition, and supported national appeals such as the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal. Other supported organisations included Bury Blind Society, Bury Lions and Bury Shopmobility.
Angela Tierney, centre manager at Mill Gate, praised everyone involved: “Raising £89,510 is an incredible achievement and reflects the generosity of our community.
“Every initiative, from The Book Nest to major appeals, has played a part in supporting vital local organisations. We’re extremely grateful to everyone who donated, sponsored, volunteered or supported our fundraising efforts throughout the year.”
Located in Bury town centre, Mill Gate serves thousands of residents and visitors each week and has increasingly taken on a wider role as a community anchor – not just for retail but for health, culture and local engagement.
