Residents in Middleton took part in a community event at the Edgar Wood Rooms to share ideas for the town’s future. The session followed the launch of the Middleton Mayoral Development Corporation, introduced the night before by actor Steve Coogan and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham.
The event was run by local charity Middleton Cooperating. Residents moved between themed tables covering key topics such as history and heritage, young people, housing, empty buildings, the town centre, transport, and local jobs. Residents were asked to give their thoughts, ideas and priorities, which will help shape the MMDC’s “Our Town, Our Future” plans.

Councillors and local group representatives were present, including members of the Friends of Tonge Hall, the Lighthouse Project, and volunteers linked to local parks and heritage sites. Students from Cardinal Langley High School also attended to offer a younger perspective.
Steve Coogan returned for the event and spoke with residents. Many people welcomed the opportunity to have a say. One resident said the room was “buzzing with optimism and ideas” and that plans for the town were “so long overdue.”
People who could not attend the session can still take part by completing the MMDC’s online survey at https://middleton.coop/mdc
