Outgoing mayor Shakil Ahmed has donated £3,500 to the Team Thompson Against Cancer appeal, capping off a year of community fundraising in support of families battling serious illness in Rochdale.
Rochdale’s Mayor for 2024/25, Councillor Shakil Ahmed, presented the cheque to the Thompson family during a visit to the Crown Oil Arena ahead of the upcoming 'A Game for Joe' fixture on Saturday 2 August, when Rochdale AFC will face Manchester United’s under-21s.
The money, raised in collaboration with Rochdale AFC Community Trust, will help establish the Joey T Foundation, named in honour of Joe Thompson, to support others dealing with the effects of cancer. The funds will go toward care, treatment support, and wellbeing initiatives.
“This is more than just a fundraising effort, it’s about standing together as a community and showing the Thompson family, and others facing similar battles, that they’re not alone,” said Cllr Ahmed. “I’ve been truly humbled by the generosity shown by residents, businesses and community groups throughout my time as mayor.”
Chantelle Thompson, speaking on behalf of the family, said: “We are overwhelmed by the support we’ve received. The kindness shown by the mayor, Rochdale AFC Community Trust, and everyone who donated means more than words can express. This money will help us establish a foundation in Joe’s name, but more than that, it’s given us hope and strength.”
The mayor and mayoress worked closely with a local fundraising committee throughout the civic year, holding events to benefit various local causes. The partnership with Rochdale AFC Community Trust was central to the Team Thompson campaign’s success.
Ryan Bradley, director of the trust, said: “This is what football and community are all about, coming together in times of need. We were proud to support the mayor’s efforts and are grateful to everyone who got involved. The Thompson family have some fantastic plans to continue Joe’s legacy, and this funding will go towards that.”
The cheque presentation took place as part of the build-up to this weekend’s commemorative match at the Crown Oil Arena, which will celebrate Joe Thompson’s legacy and highlight the impact he made on and off the pitch.
