Primary school children across Bury are being invited to take part in a new writing competition celebrating what they love most about living in the borough.
The competition has been launched by the Mayor of Bury, Councillor Noel Bayley, and is being run through Bury’s library service as part of the National Year of Reading 2026.
Open to all young people attending a primary school in the borough, the theme is “Why I Love the Place Where I Live”. Pupils are asked to write no more than 200 words explaining what makes their home town special.
Children can focus on any aspect of life in Bury. Entries must be submitted by 31 March 2026.
Pupils can hand their work in at any library in the borough or email it to library.suggestions@bury.gov.uk
Winners will receive book tokens. All entries will also be published in a special book available to borrow from Bury Libraries, showcasing young voices from across the borough.
Councillor Noel Bayley said, “Our young people have so much talent, as I discovered when I ran our Christmas card competition. I’m asking them to let their imaginations run free, think about what makes their life so good in Bury, and put those thoughts down on paper for everyone in Bury - to read.”
The competition forms part of the National Year of Reading 2026, a campaign designed to encourage people of all ages to read for pleasure. The initiative aims to reconnect people with reading as something relevant and rewarding, rooted in their own interests.
The campaign encourages people to “Go All In”, whether their passion is baking, football, science fiction, animals or art.
