A team of determined Rochdale fundraisers have smashed their first major challenge, raising thousands for local good causes on a gruelling 52-mile walk from Rochdale to Blackpool.
The Mayfield Movers, a newly formed community group, completed their “Bimble to Blackpool” trek this October, raising over £6,500 for three Rochdale-based charities, and more donations are still coming in.
The 52-mile route proved both physically and emotionally testing, but the group say they were driven forward by a shared sense of purpose and the steady stream of online support from friends, family and well-wishers.
The proceeds will go to:
- Springhill Hospice
- Rochdale Masters
- Rochdale Mayfield ARLFC’s contribution to the Rochdale Giving Back Christmas Toy Appeal
The team documented their progress via a GoFundMe page, which remains open for donations and updates: https://gofund.me/b3241e99
Richard Higgs, one of the participants, speaking to Roch Valley Radio, said the journey tested them “to the limit”.
“We’re genuinely overwhelmed by the kindness and encouragement we’ve received. This challenge pushed us to our limits, but knowing that our efforts would make a difference kept us going every step of the way,” he said. “The support from the community has been incredible, we can’t thank everyone enough.”
Special thanks were given to Scott Ramsbottom, who acted as the team’s sole support crew throughout the two-day event. His efforts behind the scenes, from route logistics to morale-boosting encouragement, played a key role in the challenge’s success.
The group says it will announce a final total in the coming weeks once all pledges have been processed.
Despite aching legs and tired feet, the Mayfield Movers have no intention of stopping. Plans are already in motion for future events, with an open invitation to anyone in the community who wants to get involved.
