A man in his 20s has died following a stabbing at a residential address in Bury on New Year’s Eve. Two people have been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said officers were called at around 11.55pm on Wednesday 31 December to reports of a disturbance at a property on Tarn Drive, Bury.
Emergency services attended the scene and found a man with injuries described as consistent with a stabbing. Despite efforts from paramedics, the man was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.
A man and a woman, both in their 20s, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody.
Officers have been at the scene since the early hours of New Year’s Day, with forensic specialists and tactical units carrying out extensive enquiries. A cordon remains in place, and police are conducting door-to-door visits and searching drains in the area.
Residents reported seeing emergency services arriving shortly after midnight. One witness described the area being taped off by 12.30am, while another said police were present from at least 2.30am.
Deputy leader of Bury Council, Councillor Tamoor Tariq, described the fatal stabbing as a “very serious incident” but reassured residents it appeared to be isolated. He added that the council and housing services were working closely with GMP.
“I want to reassure all local residents this is an isolated incident and there is no reason to assume there is a threat to the wider area,” he said. “I will be doing everything in my power to ensure local residents are considered, especially those who are vulnerable as and when things progress.”
GMP has appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward. Anyone who may have seen or heard anything around Tarn Drive late on New Year’s Eve is urged to contact police on 101 or via the Live Chat function at gmp.police.uk, quoting log 3529 of 31/12/2025.
Information can also be shared anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
