A 52-year-old man has been arrested following a series of violent handbag thefts that left women across Manchester, Salford and Bury shaken but physically unharmed.
A man suspected of targeting women walking alone across Greater Manchester has been arrested by police after a foot chase in Crumpsall.
The 52-year-old from north Manchester was detained on the night of 4 September after officers spotted him acting suspiciously in an area they had been patrolling due to recent incidents.
Police believe the man is linked to a spate of ten violent robberies reported between 24 August and 3 September. In each case, a man approached a woman in a public place and forcibly stole her handbag. Some of the victims were dragged to the ground and wrestled with during the attacks.
Seven of the women were confirmed to have had their handbags stolen. No hospital treatment was required, but officers said the victims were understandably shaken.
Detective Inspector Natasha Feerick of Greater Manchester Police’s North District Neighbourhood Crime Team said: “These are serious offences, and we take reports incredibly seriously. It is of the utmost importance that people can feel safe in their local areas.”
She confirmed the force began proactive patrols once a pattern of offending emerged, which helped lead to the arrest.
The suspect was found without any personal belongings and was thought to be preparing to strike again when police approached. He attempted to flee the scene but was caught shortly after.
DI Feerick praised the victims for reporting the incidents and urged anyone witnessing similar behaviour to contact police immediately.
“Our local police teams are committed to tackling crime and keeping people safe from harm,” she added. “Thankfully no one required hospital treatment, but they were understandably shook up.”
The man remains in custody and is being questioned by detectives.
Greater Manchester Police continues to appeal for any further witnesses or information linked to the case.
